The referee has an important role in any rugby match as arbiter of the laws of the game. Anyone involved in rugby, whatever their role, has a strong passion for the game and freely give of their time and energy because they enjoy it. The same should apply to any referee going about their business at any level of the game in our clubs, schools, colleges or universities.
Whatever your motivation to pick up the whistle, be it to help in the midi and youth game on a Sunday or meet your aspiration to referee at the highest levels; the most appropriate way to build up your knowledge and experience as a referee is to join your local Society. In Gloucestershire, we are well served by 2 Societies, both have rich histories and have produced numerous international referees down the years. They will assist in your development and progression through the game structure to enable you to reach your true potential. Not everyone is going to make the very top of the pyramid, but should strive to be the best you can be in support of our great game.
The 2 Societies that serve Gloucestershire are the Bristol Referees Society and the Gloucester and District Referee Society. The Bristol Society supplies referees to the clubs within the City of Bristol and clubs in both South Gloucestershire and North Somerset. The Gloucester and District Society serves the remainder of the geographical county including the Forest of Dean. Full details of each Society are available through their websites using the following links:
Both Referee Societies use the commercial website: Who is the Ref? , to manage their referee match appointments. If you would like access to see who the referee appointed to your forthcoming games is, please seek access to the relavent database through your local Society.
The Gloucestershire Federation of Rugby Referees
Gloucestershire Federation of Rugby Union Referees is a member of the Rugby Football Referees Union and provides the development pathway for aspiring referees from both Bristol and Gloucester & District Referees’ Societies. The Federation provides training and development opportunities for referees with potential to progress to a significantly higher level as well as supporting the recruitment and retention of match officials.
