u 20 Match Report v Hampshire 5/2/17

U20 COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP

GLOUCESTERSHIRE U20, 10 v HAMPSHIRE U20, 12

A well-organized Hampshire team held out to deter a late surge from a determined Gloucestershire side at Regentsholme, Lyndey. Gloucestershire left their rugby too late in the game and although they could have leveled the score with the final kick of the game in fairness Hampshire were the slightly better team on the day.

Hampshire took advantage of the slope in the first half to lead 12 nil at the break. Had number 10, Eddie Lewis, (Havant RFC) kicked two kickable penalties Hampshire could have been out of sight? Gloucestershire looked too much like a group of promising individuals lacking composure at key times and a lineout especially that did not function well. Lock Will Greenway (Drybrook Rfc) put him some big tackles helped by number 8 Tyler Jerum (Cleve Rfc) and scrumhalf Sam Boyland (Brighton Uni) was busy throughout linking forwards and backs. Winger Terence Babarinsa (Cinderford Rfc) looked threatening when he ran straight but all too often the few chances that Gloucestershire had petered out because of a lack of precision when it mattered.

Gloucestershire now with the slope to their advantage made a better fist of the second half where they now had the dominant scrum. The bench definitely made an impact here. Although Gloucestershire mounted a number of attacks however again promising positions were wasted and all credit to Hampshire who were well organized and were especially adept at winning Gloucestershire s lineout ball. Finally with 12 minutes of normal time remaining Terence Babarinsa burst tackles to off load to Sam Boyland who scored near the posts. This should have been a simple conversion but it wasn’t a good day for kickers on either side. Buoyed by this score Gloucestershire now mounted more attacks and after a second 5 metre scrum in as many minutes Gloucestershire worked the ball out to centre Robbie Smith (Cardiff Met) who still with work to do rode the tackles to ground the ball. Game on. Sadly on a very sticky surface Tom Webb  (Hartpury and NewentRfc) couldn’t nail the kick to tie the scores.
