BEATRICE FENSOME - VOLUNTEER OF THE SEASON
Beattie has worked tirelessly for Thornbury RFC since she joined the ladies committee in the early 1980s and has been a member of that committee, without a break, ever since despite several periods of ill-health and nursing her terminally-ill husband. Over the years she has contributed enormously to the benefit of players, spectators and committees alike. Some of the things Beattie has done for Thornbury recently include:
• Catering Officer – (she is still in this post) which involves master-minding all the catering for various
functions, sometimes more than one in a day. The standard of her buffets is very high – when the Webb Ellis Cup was at Thornbury in 2003 Thornbury were complemented by the World Cup entourage as the catering was “the best they had had anywhere in the country”.
• Match-day teas
• Catering for National and County meetings and functions.
• Preparing and feeding players on training nights.
• Opening and closing the club for deliveries in emergencies
• Cleaned the clubhouse with her family when the normal cleaner was unavailable.
When working she showed remarkable scavenging skills to secure many unwanted items of furniture and
equipment that were well-used in the rugby club and saved the club many hundreds of pounds.
It is said that no-one is indispensable but, in Beattie’s case, that may not be true. When she finally decides to step down from her work at the club she will be very hard to replace. It is probably only then that the club will really appreciate what she has quietly been doing for everyone for so many years. Thornbury RFC has a lot to thank Beattie Fensome for.
The most amazing fact, though, is that Beattie continues to complete most of the above duties at the tender age of 83!
